Back-to-school is right around the corner and teachers are prepping for the new year.
For many, this means stocking their classrooms out of their own pocket, but some teachers say Amazon is helping relieve some of this burden.
“I have a whole lot of pencils on my wish list,” Erica Hurd said. “These things run out like crazy in my classroom.”
Hurd is a Spanish teacher at Norman High School who uses an Amazon classroom wish list to help her gather school supplies.
“I never want a kid to walk into my class and get behind because they just didn’t have a pencil to do their work,” Hurd said.
Hurd is one of many teachers scouring Amazon around back-to-school.
And due to the generosity of family, friends, and strangers alike, Hurd’s wish list is growing smaller.
“All of this is off of my Amazon wish list that I posted on Prime Days this year,” she said, referring to the large pile of packages on her kitchen table.
She says everything on her wish list is a tool for success in her classroom. “We never want to inhibit a student in their ability to learn in our classroom and I think that’s why a lot of teachers find themselves in this position where they end up spending a lot of money on their classroom just out of their own pockets because they really want to do whatever they can for their kids,” Hurd said. “So much of the teacher identity is taking care of other people.”
The best way to give back is to return that favor by taking care of those who care for so many.
“Oh, good here’s all the pencils we’re talking about,” Hurd said, opening packages delivered to her on her classroom wish list.
A small gesture of sending one gift can leave a lasting impression on many.
Hurd is one of thousands of teachers who left their Amazon wish lists on this post in hopes of coming across some kind strangers.
Anyone can visit the links to these Amazon wish lists, and select items to buy, and they will be shipped to the teacher who posted them.
