Kay Tangner has dedicated her adult life to serving kids with cancer, so on her seventieth birthday, it’s time to serve the server.
“Kay has been in arts and crafts with kids at the Jimmy Everest Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders for over thirty years,” said Holly Barron.
In those thirty years, some amazing relationships have formed.
“She just drove me to keep pushing forward and just never stop and never give up,” said cancer survivor Hadley.
It only made sense that on her seventieth birthday, some of the kids that she has encouraged over the years came and encouraged her, with a firefighter escort, Ms. Kay arrived to her surprise birthday party.
“She’s met hundreds and hundreds of kids fighting cancer over the years, and just formed this precious bond with them, she just becomes so special to them,” said Barron.
“Kay put on this huge tea party for her in her room and brought these really cool little glass teacups, it was so fancy and so beautiful,” said Kristy
For Kay seeing so many of her past and current patients all in the same place was a bit overwhelming for her.
“All the people in the red, white, and blue, it was just beautiful,” said birthday girl Kay Tangner.
When Amber Bergerson’s daughter Summer lost her battle with cancer, Kay did the unthinkable.
“Kay has always had a heart for these kids that have cancer that want to go to college, and to make that dream a reality she started these scholarships and asked my permission to start one in Summer’s honor,” said Bergerson.
For all that she gives Kay insists she’s the one that is blessed.
“It’s the best thing I do, I get way more out of it than I could ever give,” said Tangner.
