We are taking a look at simple yet impactful choices we can make for a healthier lifestyle, such as the many benefits of shopping and eating local.

News 9 Health Coach Dottie Small spoke with a local dietician about the nutritional value of foods found at the farmer's market.

Taylor Conner, a dietician and family and consumer sciences educator, said fruits and vegetables help maintain blood sugar levels and digestive health and add important vitamins and minerals to a diet.

"We want to make sure we're getting a good variety, good amounts, different colors, and those sorts of things," Conner said.

Brandi Buys from the Eastside Fresh Market said supporting a local farmer's market can help you eat better while supporting the community.

"It brings the community together. You're able to support a local farm family instead of a large corporation and you're going to find the freshest produce possible," Buys said.

She said in the summer, watermelon, tomatoes, and cucumbers are some of the produce in season.

The Eastside Fresh Market is set up every Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the New Community Health and Wellness Center.
