In the United States, approximately one in five students is being or has been affected by bullying, which is over 20% of children nationwide.

Generation Why, a local youth foundation, has committed themselves to stopping the effect of bullying by combating it with creativity and meaning.

The youth group sat down with the News 9 team on the Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages Porch to explain why standing up to bullying is more crucial than ever.

Jordan Miller, the founder and CEO of the group, shared how his personal experiences have helped shape and influence the cause of Generation Why.

"I dealt with a lot of stuff growing up, especially in my college years. I lost one of my good friends to mental health. One of the things that we noticed was Oklahoma going from the 32nd to 30th in deaths from teen suicide," Miller said.

One of the biggest goals for Generation Why is for the youth of Oklahoma to understand their purpose and worth by fostering their goals and personal capabilities in life.

"Our mission is to inspire every generation by revealing purpose and providing opportunities to pursue it," Miller said.

Generation Why is hosting an event on Sunday, August 4 that will feature free haircuts, free physicals, food trucks, and bounce houses to prepare OKC kids for back to school.
