Oklahoma families are gearing up to go back to school, and this weekend is a good chance to save a few bucks on your supply list.
There are a few exceptions you'll want to consider.
It's a back-to-school tradition nearing its 20th year here in the Sooner State.
Legislators mandating retailers do away with Oklahoma's 4.5% sales tax, along with county and municipal taxes, the first weekend in August.
But there is a strategy to maximizing your money.
First, taxes will only be waived for shoes and clothing under $100.
That $100 limit doesn't apply to the total but to the actual item itself (things like hats, gloves, and coats.)
You'll want to be careful because athletic gear is not included.
Other items like jewelry, handbags, wallets, and watches are also not tax-exempt.
And, most notably, school supplies aren't covered.
Last year, lawmakers introduced a bill to include school supply items that were less than $50.
The proposal also lowered the clothing and footwear limit to $75 per item.
However, the measure was stalled in a House Committee.
Oklahoma's tax-free weekend applies to in-person shopping and online. Purchases must be made between 12:01 a.m. on Friday, and 11:59 p.m. on Sunday.
