A metro father called 911 on Sunday night after being told his son was shot and killed at the apartment complex where his family lives.
Police said a woman also died by gunfire inside the northeast Oklahoma City apartment complex.
Police released few details on Monday saying it was too early in the investigation. The male victim’s father and many other residents said they were desperate for answers and justice.
“All I could do was run downstairs and this guy was telling me my son was dead and I was like I don’t understand, he’s dead,” said Kermit Spurlock, victim’s father.
Spurlock said the reality of losing his oldest son Kermit Camel had not sunk in.
“It really hasn’t hit me yet,” said Spurlock. “When I look at his clothes, I think about my son. He was the best thing that ever happened to me.”
Police said Spurlock's son and a woman were found shot to death at the Sooner Haven apartments near Northeast 36th Street and Lottie Avenue, but no one was arrested. Crime scene investigators spent hours at the home collecting evidence.
“Right now, we are very early on in the investigation so it’s unclear what exactly led up to them being killed,” said Msgt. Gary Knight, Oklahoma City Police Department.
A community leader who counseled Camel through tough times said the news of his death paralyzed him. In a statement, Marlon James said in part, "Kermit was a quiet, gentle, humble, and respectful young man...he and his entire family became a part of an extended part of my family."
James was not the only one concerned for the victim's safety in the weeks and days leading up to his death.
“I’ve been telling him, son stay away from them people,” said Spurlock. “I told him if you died I ain’t got no money to bury you, so it’s just a bad situation. He just wouldn’t stop.”
Police have not released information about the woman who died. Spurlock said he did not know who she was. The victim's father said he had two children who lived in Texas.
Citizens are asked to call the homicide tip line at (405) 297-1200 if they have information that could help the investigation.
