Tinkerfest at Discovery Lab is back for a second year.

The event is Saturday, September 7th and is included with general admission.

Tinkering is when a person works with their hands to create or repair something. Director of Education Chip Lindsey said some of the world's most famous inventions started with tinkering, dating as far back as the Bronze Age.

He gave the example of casting metal.

"Before long they were building axes and spearpoints and all sorts of things that were very useful that you could not find in nature naturally," Lindsey said.

Using a hot plate, pewter, and a clay-like material, he taught us to pewter, cast a finger, hand, key, and pin. Lindsey said activities like this allow kids to explore and build.

"When we have a chance to get hands-on with real phenomena like molten metal or gases or fibers or tools, you begin to go, I can do that," he added.

That unlocks innovation.

"Just getting exposure to a real material in a real way makes you think about the world differently and more creatively sometimes," Lindsey said.

Inspiring the next generation of world changers.
