Mid-Del group home in Midwest City is a cool place, that takes care of and employs adults with developmental disabilities.
“Sometimes we’ll go out to ball fields and pick up trash,” said Group Home Resident Daniel Harris.
Since 1983 Mid-del group has been serving the community through their work programs.
“We have partnered with Century Martial Arts for the last 36 years, and we fill about a thousand sandbags a day,” said Mid-Del Group Home Executive Director Joel Bain.
They have been fortunate to secure multiple contracts throughout Midwest City and Del City. In addition to employment opportunities, they also provide residential services for the individuals in the program.
“We have twenty-four individuals that live with us full-time. We have three male homes and one female home,” said Bain.
As you can imagine, even with the contracts, expenses for this type of place are quite high.
“This year, we are no different than anybody else, and so our insurance has gone up about twenty-six percent,” said Bain.
To offset some of the cost they host what they call their run, walk, or roll event.
“It is a fun event, we actually have a sanctioned 5K event to where people can actually run for times,” said Bain.
For the less competitive there is a one-mile fun run.
“That’s what all of our residents race in,” said Bain.
Something Daniel Harris was ready for last year.
“I won first place so it’s pretty good,” said Harris.
Harris has already been training to defend his title.
“A lot of times I’ll walk around the house or around the property trying to get practice,” said Harris.
The event is on Saturday, August 24th, and you must register to participate in all the fun.
“You can run for time, you can walk it and have fun, you can bring your bike, we have had people in the past that have had trikes,” said Bain.
Even Wheelchairs are acceptable and since it's open for everyone, the residents are preparing for competition with anyone.
“David Payne, I challenge you to a race,” said Mid-Del Group Home Resident Wade Magill.
Volunteers are needed as well as community support and sponsors, information, and registration can be found at www.mdgh.org/run-walk-or-roll.
