Contract For Oklahoma Religious Charter School Officially Canceled

Oklahoma was set to be the first state in the nation to open a publicly funded religious charter school, but on Monday, that contract was officially canceled.

The statewide virtual charter school board unanimously decided to cancel the contract between St. Isidore of Seville and the state.

But things could change if the US Supreme Court decides to pick up the case.

The vote comes after months of back and forth in both county court and state supreme court.

Oklahoma justices ruled in June that the school was unconstitutional, ordering the charter school board to cancel the contract.

The board voted to rescind the contract on Monday but had a contingency: If the State Supreme Court appeals their June decision or if the US Supreme Court decides to pick up the case and overrules the state Supreme Court, the St. Isidore contract would be reinstated automatically.

The next charter school board meeting is set for September 9th at 1 p.m.
