The man responsible for the death of George Floyd has been transferred to a facility in Oklahoma City, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
In 2021, a jury convicted Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd during an arrest captured on video with Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck for 9½ minutes.
Chauvin is simultaneously serving state and federal prison sentences. The Federal Bureau of Prisons website tracks inmates from around the country. On Monday, the Federal Transfer Center at Will Rogers World Airport listed the former police offer. Chauvin was transferred to OKC on August 9, according to BOP records.
Last November, at a Tucson Arizona prison, another inmate stabbed Chauvin according to the Associated Press. Prison records showed Chauvin will be released in 2038.
A BOP spokesperson confirmed Chauvin’s transfer but could not release specifics saying, “For privacy, safety, and security reasons, we do not discuss the conditions of confinement for any individual, including reasons for transfer. Additionally, specific designation information is not releasable until after an individual arrives at his or her final destination.”
Chauvin’s actions ignited both violent and peaceful nationwide protests for law enforcement reforms. Minnesota governor, and now vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz, helped champion a series of police reforms including a ban on warrior-style choke holds in his state.
“One thing this office can do is convene the conversation,” said Walz, at a public safety round table in February of 2022. "We can ask for the reforms that we’re all searching for and hold accountability.”
In 2022, the Oklahoma City Council received a report, that included 39 recommendations focused on de-escalation, community engagement, and accountability.
BOP officials did not say how long Chauvin would be held in OKC. According to the FTC facility handbook, the center houses inmates such as in-transit holdovers and parole violators.
