Annual Harmonica Convention Comes To Tulsa

The harmonica is an instrument in a league of its own. Players, teachers, and enthusiasts know that and gather each year to preserve it.

This week the Society for the Preservation and Advancement of the Harmonica (SPAH) is in Tulsa for its 61st annual convention.

"It is an unusual instrument, and the players are just as unusual," said Vice President Jerry Deall. "We get together every year to learn from each other and to see each other."

David Berntson, founder of the Route 66 Harmonica Club, loves it when the event is in his city.

He said, "I think it is just an incredible experience to see this much harmonica talent and to see harmonica played very well."

On Wednesday, Aug. 14, at 7 p.m., his club will perform among other world-class musicians in a free show at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Tulsa. The show is open to the public.

That is also where attendees of the convention can shop vendors selling harmonicas, microphones, and accessories, as well as attend daily seminars and classes.

"I have had people who have never played before come to the convention and go away with new harmonicas, new cases, and a newfound passion for the instrument," Deall said.

The harmonica is the only wind instrument that is played by breathing out and breathing in.

Berntson picked it up when he was a kid, influenced by his grandfather.

"He had harmonicas at the house, and I was able to decode some songs and play some songs," he said.

Deall started playing the harmonica later in life.

"I did not start playing music until I was 46," he said.

What makes the harmonica so special is its accessibility. 

"It is easy to take lessons, it is easy to learn from others, and it is easy to carry with you," said Deall.
