In our Oklahoma's Own Focus on Kids, we're taking a closer look at the problem of chronic absenteeism in schools.

According to a study by The Associated Press and Stanford University, last year, about 12 million students were considered chronically absent in 42 states and Washington D.C., where data was available.

The report found absenteeism has risen about 6% in Oklahoma since before the pandemic.

Tulsa Public Schools say it started last year with a 47% chronic absenteeism rate but ended at 44%.

The district says it's working with parents and community leaders to make sure kids get to school.
