As Oklahoma schools open their doors for the 2024-25 school year, House Democrats have requested a detailed timeline from the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) regarding outstanding funding and service issues, according to a release sent out on Friday.

The call for action comes amid growing concerns over financial discrepancies and delayed services affecting school districts across the state, according to the release.

In a press release from the Oklahoma House of Representatives, Democratic leaders expressed frustration over the lack of progress despite repeated calls for accountability from the Republican supermajority. They argue that the State Superintendent's alleged neglect necessitates an investigative committee to ensure transparency and proper management of educational resources.

On August 15, 2024, the Legislative Office of Fiscal Transparency (LOFT) announced it would investigate OSDE’s spending concerns. While the investigation is expected to continue into next year, Democrats emphasize the urgency of resolving these issues promptly to meet the immediate needs of students and schools.

Several school districts have reported missing funds, which Rep. Andy Fugate (D-Del City), argues should have been addressed before the start of the school year. The press release highlighted that Oklahoma schools begin mid-August, making timely answers and support crucial.

According to the release, Democrats are also concerned about various unresolved issues, including Title 1 funding, maternity leave reimbursements, school security funds, and the provision of inhalers for students. As well as problems with teacher certification renewals and the student information systems for special needs students further compound the situation.

The release states that the House Democrats have called for OSDE to provide evidence of adequate staffing capable of addressing and resolving these pressing issues. They stress that their efforts are focused on ensuring that public school districts receive the necessary funding and support to effectively serve students.
