Kirk Francis threw four touchdowns to lead Tulsa to a 62-28 victory over Northwestern State in their season opener on Thursday. Coach Kevin Wilson was pleased, but noted there is still a lot of work to do. "We have a chance to be much better," said Wilson. "I hope those guys see there is a lot to clean up and we can play so much better."
Northwestern State’s Kenneth Lacy scored on a 75-yard run early, but Tulsa quickly responded. Francis connected with Kamdyn Benjamin for a 36-yard touchdown, and Benjamin later returned a punt 66 yards for another score. The Demons tied it briefly when Cam Hardy blocked a field goal and Antonio Hall returned it 74 yards.
In the second quarter, Tulsa pulled away with four more touchdowns. Francis threw for 299 yards, including a 29-yard pass to Jeremiah Ballard and two more to Connor Vaughn, with the final score coming just before halftime for a 41-14 lead. Kirk Francis had praise for Vaughn after the game. "He's matured so much on and off the field," according to Francis. "He can be a great tool for us, and a weapon down the field."
