The first, and possibly only, debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump is Tuesday, and the stakes are high.
After days of preparation, Harris arrived in Philadelphia, where she and Trump will face off in the highly anticipated debate.
“I think he's gonna lie,” Harris said. “There's no floor for him in terms of how low he would go and we should be prepared for that. He is not burdened by telling the truth.”
The debate could potentially alter the course of the election, with recent polls showing the candidates neck-and-neck.
“Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin [are] all razor tight,” said Anthony Salvanto, CBS News director of elections and surveys. “These are all within the margin of error — effectively even.”
A newly released memo from Trump’s campaign said, in part, “Now that her honeymoon is over, the debate will be the first time Kamala will answer tough questions. In doing so, Kamala Harris will be revealed to America as a radical left lunatic.”
A new video released by Harris’ campaign shows former Trump administration officials criticizing the former president.
“It should come as no surprise that I will not be endorsing Trump this year,” former Vice President Mike Pence said.
In a conference call, Trump campaign advisor Jason Miller said the former president would go after Harris on issues including border security, foreign policy, and inflation.
Harris has been practicing on a stage with lights, sparring with former Hillary Clinton aide Philippe Reines, who is standing in as Trump and even dressing like him.
Trump is holding policy sessions with a small team of advisors, including Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz and former Democratic presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard.
Sources familiar with Harris’ debate preparation say the vice president is watching Trump’s past debates.
