September is recognized as National Suicide Prevention and Recovery Awareness Month.
Echota Behavioral Health is a full-service mental health agency with three locations in Oklahoma serving tribal and nontribal citizens.
The organization says this month is a good way to help the community avoid stigmas and start conversations.
The Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services says that every week, about 300 Oklahomans need urgent mental health care.
In 2022, the department says 1 in 10 students has attempted suicide, and older adults have the highest suicide rate among all age groups.
Echota Behavioral Health is preparing for the 'Out of the Darkness Walk' to raise awareness about suicide, provide support for those affected by suicide, and promote mental health and wellness.
“We’d like for people to understand the importance of asking for help because we want them to understand they’re not alone in their journey and there are resources for those who need it,” Morton said.
The 'Out of the Darkness Walk' is Saturday, Sept. 14, at 5:30 p.m. at Norris Park in Tahlequah.
