The Oklahoma Women, Infants, and Children Supplemental Nutrition Program will transition to a new contract next month that will switch the manufacturer of baby formula the program supplies to Oklahomans.

Oklahoma WIC has used Gerber formula for the past 20 years, but the nutrition program will begin using Similac starting in October.

Laura Stout, a relations and information specialist with Oklahoma WIC, says all WIC programs in the U.S. are required to have a formula contract in place for cost containment purposes.

Similac won the new contract bid, and will now be the sole provider for Oklahoma.

Stout says they are excited about the new contract because there have been formula shortages with the former provider, and says Similac doesn't have those issues.

“We are excited to have a contract in place with a formula brand that has adequate stocking at this point, so that families are able to find the formula they need in the stores and do not having to travel to multiple stores or call around to find the formula that their baby needs,” Stout said.

There will be four formula options to fit every baby's needs, including milk-based, low-lactose, broken-down protein, and soy-based formulas.

Stout says messages have been sent to families involved with Oklahoma's WIC program regarding the new changes.
