The Porch: Crayons Improv Shares Whimsical Approach To Family-Friendly Comedy

Nicole Miller, Director and Co-Founder of Crayons Improv, stopped by the Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages Porch to share the story and mission behind the family-friendly improvisational group based in Tulsa.

What is Crayons Improv?

Crayons Improv is a performance troupe that specializes in creating engaging, spontaneous, and humorous shows suitable for all ages. Since its inception in 2007, when the group performed at a church fundraiser, Crayons Improv has been delighting audiences with its unscripted, interactive approach to comedy.

What inspired the name?

According to Nicole, the name "Crayons" was chosen on a whim by her co-founder. Over time, it became a fitting emblem for their playful and colorful approach to improv, even incorporating crayons into their performances from time to time.

Where and when can people watch a show?

Crayons Improv holds a regular show on the second Friday of each month at Theatre Tulsa’s rehearsal space, located on 55th and Peoria. Shows run from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. and typically last an hour.

They also perform on the last Thursday of each month at Geaux Shows in Broken Arrow, 3812 S. Elm, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The performance is family-friendly and audiences can expect a night of spontaneous comedy based on their suggestions and participation, including fun scenes inspired by drawings. Why improv?

Nicole’s passion for improv stems from her deep love for performing. After spending years in traditional theatre, she was drawn to the spontaneity and quicker pace of improv. Having trained at the legendary Second City in Chicago and attended numerous comedy festivals, she’s honed her craft and now shares her skills with Tulsa audiences.
