River Parks broke ground on another new expansion at Tulsa's Turkey Mountain. Construction began Wednesday, and the expansion will add about 88 acres to Turkey Mountain.
The expansion is located south of 61st Street and west of Elwood.
River Parks says it includes a new 6-mile multi-use trail, and the area will be called the Sanctuary. It says the trail is named that to give a sense of refuge and protection for all visitors.
Along that trail, there will be a large treehouse to see all of the scenery and greenery within Turkey Mountain.
This project is funded by donations from the Daryl and Julie Christner Family Foundation. The foundation says this passion project is the family's wish to honor their father.
"This was a huge passion project for my dad. He loved mountain biking; there's nothing he enjoyed more than spending hours on his bike and coming out, like I said, beating himself up at Turkey Mountain," Josh Christner said. "With him not being here, it's really cool to carry on his passion and what he wanted for the City of Tulsa."
River Parks says it expects the work to be completed and the area opened by the spring of 2025.
