Tulsa kayakers will soon have a new spot to launch their boats and have some fun on the water, officials say.

Workers along the Arkansas River in Tulsa have been hard at work installing an adaptive kayak launch along the Arkansas River near the intersection of South Denver Avenue and Riverside Drive.

The new adaptive kayak launch offers a safe way for anyone with a disability to enter and exit a boat more easily, with the goal of making kayaking more accessible to everybody in Tulsa.

“One of the biggest aspects is that this can be used by virtually anyone,” Scott Tihansky with Board Safe Docks said. “That has been probably the biggest takeaway from what we’ve been doing on these types of projects is the feedback we get from just the general public,”

The construction crew working on the kayak launch's installation said projects like this one have big impacts on the community.

“We have found that there are more communities that are doing these exact type of projects where we are putting in blue trails in all parts of the country, which is allowing communities to connect,” Tihansky said.

When it opens, the kayak launch will be open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. for anyone who wants to rent a kayak, or bring their own and enjoy the water.
