Some of the most iconic art in American history is now on display at Philbrook.
American Artists American Stories covers 200 years from 1776-1976 and features artists like Mary Cassatt, Barkley L. Hendricks, Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, Thomas Moran, and many more.
The portraits and sculptures of the exhibition are on loan from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
"They never travel," said Philbrook curator Susan Green. "The only reason these works are traveling is because the museum and art school is undergoing a renovation."
The collection, with famous works like the Revolutionary War-era portrait of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart, is attracting new faces to Philbrook.
"We have had visitors from Tulsa coming in, visitors from the surrounding area, and visitors coming in from out of state, too," said Green.
She said walking through the exhibition is like going on a journey through American history.
"You have striking gilded age portraits of beautiful women and wonderful ball gowns, to kind of gritty cityscapes from the early 1900s, and see what it was like to see this urban reality emerging," Green added.
American Artists American Stories has more than 100 pieces. It will be at Philbrook until Dec. 29.
