Hurricane Milton Landfall: Travis Meyer Details The Category 3 Storm Hitting Florida

Hurricane Milton is now hitting Florida’s coast with Category 2 winds, down from its earlier Category 5 intensity near the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico two days ago.

The storm has lost some of its strength in the past several hours, which is a relief for homeowners and businesses along the coast from Tampa and southward.

Despite the weakening, significant damage, flooding, and power outages are expected over the next 12 hours as the hurricane moves east and exits Florida on Thursday.

"This is a very strong Category 3 Hurricane," Chief Meteorologist Travis Meyer said.

While conditions remain serious, the National Hurricane Center's forecast has been accurate, and the reduction in the storm’s intensity is welcomed.

Many residents of Tulsa have connections to Florida's west coast, and a lot of anxious attention is focused on the hurricane’s impact in the coming hours.

"Winds are going to be a huge problem, there will be so many power outages," Travis said. "Not many of us have ever been through hours of winds of 75 mph."

Former News On 6 storm tracker Timm Crone shared footage from Venice, Florida, approximately six miles inland on Wednesday as the Hurricane rolled in.

"The eye is supposed to come over my house," Crone said. "Right now we're getting 55-60 mph of sustained winds, with occasional gusts to 85."
