A small-town band is taking a big leap.
Turner Pitts, Tucker Leathers, and Tyse Buck are members of Blue Mentality — a band out of Eufaula.
“It’s definitely been a journey,” said Pitts.
They formed two years ago in high school and say the connection was instant.
“I think that God put us here for a reason, together,” said Leathers.
The trio first captured attention when they took home first place at the Oklahoma State FFA Convention talent show in May. They performed at the BOK Center to 14,000 people.
“It was real nerve-wracking, you’re behind stage, you’re like ‘I’m about to go do this, I’m about to go play in front of all these people,' but I sat behind the drum set and it just clicked,” said Pitts.
Now, they’re taking their talents to the next level and will be competing at the National FFA talent competition in Indianapolis.
The members are not just proud Oklahomans, but also proud citizens of the Cherokee Nation.
“Everywhere we go, we want people to know that we are Cherokee Nation citizens, we are proud of our backgrounds, our roots, our Indian heritage,” said Leathers.
Though competing against nearly a hundred acts won’t be easy, they hope the contest can lend a hand in kick-starting their career as a band.
“Whether we win or not, we’re gonna be there, and people are gonna hear our names, see our faces,” Leathers said.
Names and faces people are about to recognize far beyond Oklahoma.
“I feel like we’ve just been coming together trying our best and we’re gonna go up there to Indianapolis and give it our all and see what we can get done,” said Buck.
