Tulsa Tech just received a huge donation: a jet.

The Gulfstream G2 airstream is a donation from L3Harris, which will serve as a hands-on training asset for students in the FAA Accredited Aviation Maintenance Program.

The aircraft was built in the late 1960s, and its final descent ended in Tulsa.

While it's an exciting addition to the school's aviation program, some students, like Kyle Dusenberry, felt it was a bittersweet moment.

“Honestly, I was thinking about how kind of sad it was that this was the last time the plane was flying just because it is a really expensive plane and it's probably done a lot of good in its life,” Dusenberry said. “It's kind of sad that it will never fly again, but it's also cool that I will be able to work on it, walk around in it and see how it works a little bit better."

This is the first high-performance jet students from Tulsa Tech will be able to work on. Its unusual shape resulted from its work for the Department of Defense.

Sheryl Oxley, the Aviation Programs Coordinator, said the industry is growing rapidly, so having a jet like this will be a huge advantage.

“It's demanding; we have a lot of students coming through, and it's very important because with the field growing like it is, we need to make sure we produce the best mechanic we can possibly produce,” Oxley said.

It may be a goodbye to the open air, but this jet will go on to train the next generation of aviation professionals.
