Mother Outraged Over Sentence For Man Who Caused Her Son's Death: 'He Has No Remorse'

A mother is outraged after the man who caused her son's death gets sentenced to three years in prison as part of a plea deal.

Devon Pigg was doing a wheelie on his motorcycle in Tulsa in 2022 when he crashed into his friend Shawn Davis, killing him.

After the death, Pigg was arrested again for a burglary, and then while out on bond, he was arrested again for leading police on a high-speed pursuit on a motorcycle.

The victim's mom says this isn't justice. Natasha Bartlett drove 12 hours through the night to be in court Monday morning to be a voice for her son Shawn Davis. Now, she's heading back home angry, sad and disappointed. She says her son's life is worth more than a couple of years behind bars.

"Disgust. Three years for a habitual offender? He got three years for killing my son,” said Bartlett.

Investigators say Pigg and Davis were riding motorcycles together in 2022 and Pigg did a wheelie and landed on top of Davis. Davis spent the next 10 days on life support before he died.

"So basically, he got a slap on the wrist for taking a Marine's life. Taking my only child's life,” said Bartlett.

Davis served four years in the Marines and his mother says he was a great man who loved anything with wheels.

Pigg was originally charged with negligent homicide in 2022 and before he was arrested on that warrant, he was arrested for burglary, having a stolen car, and other charges in 2023.

He bonded out of jail for that case and was arrested again last September for leading Sand Springs Police on a high-speed pursuit on a motorcycle, going more than 100 miles per hour. The pursuit eventually ended when Pigg crashed in Tulsa.

"He continued to break the law after he took his friend's life. He has no remorse. He's a habitual offender. He's going to continue to be a criminal,” said Bartlett.

Prosecutors and Pigg's attorney agreed to a plea deal where Pigg would be given three years in prison for all of his charges.

The Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office sent us a statement saying:

“The death of Shawn Davis was avoidable. The responsibility for his death will be borne on the shoulders of Davis’s friend, Devon Pigg, for the rest of his life. Likewise, Mr. Davis’s family will never have the enjoyment of his company for the rest of their lives."
On Monday, Devon Pigg pled guilty to second-degree manslaughter and was sentenced to three years in prison. Our office has a duty to file charges based on the evidence and information provided to us. In this case, it was originally filed as a misdemeanor negligent homicide. It was then amended to a felony homicide charge. When preparing this case for trial, our Office determined there were significant evidentiary hurdles in the case. We discussed these issues with the victim’s family prior to the defendant's pleading. No case is exactly alike, and each case has to stand on its strengths and weaknesses. Based upon the facts and evidence of the case, our Office made a recommendation which accounted for the evidentiary problems, but still required incarceration.”

"He gets to raise his children. He gets to watch his children graduate high school and walk them down the aisle. They get to have a life. They get to go visit Daddy at jail. Guess what I get to do, I get to go to the grave site to visit my child,” said Bartlett.

The judge had some harsh words for Pigg in the courtroom, calling his actions an unthinkable level of stupidity. News On 6 asked Pigg's attorney for a comment on the sentence but she declined.
