While many were focused on the United States presidential race on Election Day, Oak Crest Elementary students were anxious to know who would become the next president of their library.
The library turned into a polling location to elect one of the three candidates on the ballot: Harry Potter, Bad Seed, and Dogman.
"I thought this would be a great way to walk through the process themselves,” Katie Hurst, the school’s librarian, said.
The campaigns for each book character were run by the school's fifth graders as a way for them to learn about how the electoral process works.
"We are saying, vote for Harry Potter because they made him the leader of Dumbledore's army,” Yelaina Espinoza, a fifth grader, said. “We have been saying he's good at magic and he will protect you and his books are in here and you should vote for him."
"I think I am going to vote for Dogman,” Sylvia Avila, another fifth grader, said.
Lines moved quickly, and the poll workers were friendly. But when the polls close at Oak Crest, the results won't make national news, but they'll keep these lessons in mind when it's their time to vote for president of the United States.
"It's their choice, but we would still like them to vote for a certain person, but it's fine if they don't want to vote for a certain person. They can vote for whoever they want,” Espinoza said.
A lesson even adults could learn from.
The kids will know the result of the election for president of the library on Wednesday morning.
