The holidays can be a tough time for seniors who don't have family to spend it with.
Danielle Hill with Life Senior Services joined News On 6 to preview one way you can help provide some holiday cheer.
"Life senior services exist, first and foremost to help anyone who's 50 plus live their best life," said Hill. "We've got a variety of programs and services that people can take advantage of kind of regardless of what stage they're at."
Stocking Drives Provide Essentials and Cheer
One of the organization's key initiatives during the holiday season is its stocking drive. This program collects donations of filled stockings to distribute to seniors in need.
"Our stocking drive is great for helping provide a variety of seniors in our programs with something to make kind of a more dark time of year," explained Hill. "Receiving a visitor and a stocking around the holiday times can be just very joyful experience."
What to Include in Donation Stockings
Hill there are several types of items that make great stocking stuffers, including practical essentials as well as fun, engaging gifts.
"We have, like, word search, you know, puzzle books, things like that. We have like essentials, like a night light that adjusts so that helps keep people safe when they're walking around their home," said Hill. "Socks are really good, you know. So like having something warm, like a hat or a scarf, but like, you know, just a nice, like seasonal, you know, fun pair of socks to have in a stocking."
How to Get Involved
Those interested in donating can visit the Life Senior Services website to find drop-off locations or an Amazon wish list. The main stocking drive event will be held on November 19th.
"We have a main stocking drive that will be November 19 out front. It's on 31st Street between Sheridan and Yale and Sheridan, and we'll be out there in our big green bus collecting stockings," Hill said.
