A grant from the U.S. Department of Labor is helping Oklahoma CareerTech connect more students with employers statewide.
Oklahoma CareerTech now leads the state in offering U.S. Department of Labor-registered apprenticeships. The organization recently received over $500,000 in federal funding to expand its apprenticeship programs.
Leaders say apprenticeships provide opportunities for students to work and learn simultaneously. These programs allow students to earn wages, gain on-the-job experience, receive mentorship, and obtain industry-recognized credentials in their chosen fields.
Justin Siler, a CareerTech liaison, emphasized the importance of these programs for Oklahoma’s workforce.
"That gives us an extra tool in our workforce development toolbox and the opportunity to support industry and employers throughout Oklahoma and all kinds of different types of industries and support their workforce development and talent pipeline effort," Siler said.
According to the Department of Labor, 90% of students who complete registered apprenticeships retain their employment after the program and earn higher wages.
