The social security administration inside the Eastgate Metroplex, formerly known as Eastland Mall, has had to close several times due to roof leaks when it rains.

"There's buckets in the hallways, there's trash cans collecting water, and there's just giant wet spots of carpet," said Lester Burgard.

Burgard works for the Social Security Administration and says they've been dealing with leaking since August and are concerned about the water damage and long-term issues with mold.

"Every time it rains, there's leaks, and the leaks just seem to get worse," said Burgard.

Burgard says the property is in bad shape and he wants something done.

There was a report made to OSHA detailing the concerns with a deadline to respond to those concerns Tuesday.

Cell phone video from inside the mall shows stained carpets from what Burgard says were puddles of water from the record rain this month.

He says this issue has impacted his office and other businesses in the mall since August.

News On 6 reached out to the New Jersey company that owns Eastgate. Shelbourne purchased the property in 2019 after the building dealt with a bed bug infestation under a previous owner.

A representative from the company issued the following statement:

"We are very proactive in responding to water intrusion reported by our tenants, our maintenance team or visitors in property in addition to repairing roof leaks of any kind to keep Eastgate a safe working environment for our tenants. We recently spent over $600,000 replacing the roof membrane on the west side of the property and we will continue to do so as needed."

The company also tells us they are working with roofers and professional restoration crews to fix the problem and clean up the damage.

They say those repairs should be completed by next week.
