Grateful Tulsa Mother Focused On Son's Recovery Following Car Crash With Horse: 'Should Have Been So Much Worse'

A Tulsa mother is now focusing on helping her son recover after he was a passenger inside a car that crashed into a horse more than a week ago in Tulsa.

Tulsa Police say the horse died and all five people involved were injured but will be okay.

Cali McMickle says her son has a long road to recovery. It was just over a week ago that she says everything changed.

"When they did see the stop sign, they were already going through it," McMickle said.

Tulsa police say four teenagers in a car hit a man riding a horse. John was in the backseat of the car.

"When they collided with the horse, the horse hit the windshield and started to peel up the roof of the car and flipped and bounced, hit the two kids in the backseat and ultimately landed," said McMickle.

Cali says John was unrecognizable and could only be identified by his hair.

"John's hair is his pride and joy," she said.

John had head injuries and several deep cuts and broken bones in his face. Even though those injuries are serious, Cali is grateful.

"There were literally angels, or a bubble, or something around all these kids because of their injuries, my son had the most extensive, however, it should have been so much worse," she said.

She says the driver of the car her son was in was speeding but hopes others can forgive him. 

"Everybody makes mistakes. That's part of being human. Humility is a big thing, understanding," said McMickle. 

She hopes this crash will encourage the City of Tulsa to put lights on the stop signs and require horse riders to wear reflective gear.

Cali says John has had one surgery and might be looking at a couple more surgeries and he could be released from the hospital by the end of the week.
