TULSA, Okla. -
The holiday season is a time filled with shopping, decorating, and festive activities like ice skating. But to help prevent injury this Christmas, consider adding some holiday-themed exercises to your routine. These movements are designed to prevent common injuries that can occur while preparing for the season's activities.
- Overhead Press: Begin by holding dumbbells at shoulder height. Extend your arms overhead, keeping a slight bend in your elbows. This movement mimics placing decorations on your Christmas tree, a task that often involves reaching overhead. To modify, use lighter weights or skip them altogether. Aim for eight repetitions.
- Lunges: Step out into a lunge position, placing your foot flat on the ground and your opposite knee nearly touching the floor. This exercise simulates picking up heavy boxes, a common task during the holiday season with all the online shopping deliveries. Perform lunges with or without weights, depending on your fitness level.
- Reverse Flies: Start with your feet shoulder-width apart and knees slightly bent. Hold weights in front of you, then bring them outward in a reverse fly motion. This movement is designed to simulate opening presents, a familiar holiday activity. Use lighter weights if needed, especially if you're new to the exercise.
These exercises are easy to do at home and can be modified for different fitness levels.
