As winter approaches, energy bills often rise, but there are simple ways to keep costs under control while staying warm and comfortable. Chad Previch from Oklahoma Natural Gas shares some practical tips for Oklahomans to save money this winter.

1. Optimize Your Home’s Efficiency

Start by addressing the basics. Regularly changing your furnace's air filters can significantly impact energy efficiency. According to Previch, “Changing those regularly can save you up to 20% on your energy usage. So go to the store and change them regularly.” This small investment reduces energy consumption and extends the life of your heating unit, potentially saving you years of costs.

Additionally, check your doors, windows, and outlets for drafts. Use weather stripping to seal cracks and foam insulation for outlets to prevent heat from escaping. He said these minor adjustments could lead to a 15-20% reduction in your energy bill.

2. Adjust Your Water Heater and Thermostat

Keeping your water heater set at 120 degrees Fahrenheit is another effective way to save. Lowering the temperature reduces energy usage while still providing adequate hot water for household needs.

For your thermostat, aim for a comfortable yet efficient setting. Previch suggests resisting the urge to crank up the heat: “Grab a blanket, put a sweatshirt on, and stay comfortable.” Layering up not only saves money but also keeps your system from overworking, which can reduce wear and tear on heating equipment.

3. Winterize and Maintain Outdoor Equipment

Don’t overlook the importance of outdoor maintenance. If you notice ice on your natural gas meter, use a broom or brush—never chip away at it—to remove the ice safely. Additionally, clear dead tree limbs around the meter to prevent damage during strong winds.
