Edmond Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Angela Grunewald announced her retirement in a letter to families on Friday, Jan. 3.
The letter announcing her retirement reads:
Edmond Families,
As we prepare to return to school next week, I am writing today to share some personal news. After deep, personal reflection over Winter Break, I have decided to retire at the end of this school year.
I love this district, our students and staff members deeply. I have enjoyed my 17 years in Edmond immensely. My love and devotion for our district has fueled my desire to lead EPS. Serving as your superintendent has been the highlight of my career. I continue to have so many dreams for this district to help us better serve students. I have no doubt that many of those dreams will come to fruition, just under the next leader.
The Edmond School Board will begin their superintendent search immediately. I’m confident that a leader equally or even more passionate about education and Edmond Schools will be found. EPS has a strong, dedicated district leadership team and the site administrators who are in place. This district will be in good hands.
I cannot wait to see our students back in the classroom next Tuesday, and I look forward to the second semester. It has been my pleasure and honor to serve as the Superintendent of Edmond Public Schools.
Thank you all for your continued support and partnership.
Grunewald's Background:
Grunewald became the district's first female superintendent in June 2021, and leads Oklahoma’s third-largest public school district, serving nearly 26,000 students and employing more than 3,100 staff across 30 campuses.
Her career in education began as an elementary teacher in Snyder, El Reno, and Leedey before she joined Edmond Public Schools as assistant principal and principal at Charles Haskell Elementary. She later moved to Sequoyah Middle School as principal.
Grunewald transitioned to district administration roles, serving Piedmont Public Schools as Director of Curriculum and Instruction and Mustang Public Schools as Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction. She returned to Edmond in 2016 as Executive Director of Elementary Education, was later promoted to Associate Superintendent for Educational Services, and ascended to the district's top leadership role in 2021.
Grunewald holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in school leadership from Southwestern Oklahoma State University, as well as a doctorate from Oklahoma State University. She has also served as an adjunct professor at the University of Central Oklahoma.
Grunewald has been in the spotlight when it comes to Oklahoma education in 2024, first over a rule regarding books in school libraries. She also became the center of attention from State Superintendent Ryan Walters and several state lawmakers when a student sparked a protest after he was asked to remove an American flag from his truck on campus.
