Police are searching for a car burglary suspect who was caught on camera in northwest Oklahoma City breaking into vehicles the day after Christmas.

The suspect was also accused of shooting at the victims he stole from. Besides the video of the suspect in the act, police found the gun he allegedly used to shoot at the victims. The weapon was tossed in a neighbor's front yard near Northwest 16th Street and Council Road.

“It was like 7:30 in the morning,” said Logan Murphy, who witnessed the car burglary. “The day after Christmas.”

The burglar struck just after Logan Murphy's stepbrother loaded a suitcase and gifts into his car to head home. He quickly ran inside to tell his family goodbye.

“He was coming outside at that moment and saw someone with a bag or a suitcase rolling down the middle of the road,” said Murphy. “He said, ‘Hey I think that’s my bag.’”

Murphy said his stepfather ran outside to confront the suspect not realizing he was armed.

“He was like hey you got my kid’s stuff,” said Murphy. “That’s when they guy brandished a weapon and said, ‘Hey I’ll kill you.’”

The men backed off when the suspect fired off a shot.

“We realize emotions run high,” said Sgt. Dillon Quirk, Oklahoma City Police Department. “But you should never try to mitigate or investigate on your own accord.”

Police said the suspect burglarized a truck several houses down, stealing Christmas gifts and a knife. He was caught on camera without a face mask.

“We have yet to identify who this suspect is,” said Quirk.

Police posted photos of the person on social media hoping someone would recognize him. Investigators have another piece of evidence the suspect left behind.

“Another neighbor in the area actually found that firearm in the grass as they were out walking in the neighborhood,” said Quirk.

Murphy was thankful the suspect no longer had the weapon.

“If someone is desperate enough to pull a gun on someone for some Christmas presents,” said Murphy. “It’s not worth it.”

The suspect ditched the suitcase in the road. Police are checking the gun for fingerprints and determining whether it was stolen.

If you recognize the suspect in the pictures, call the Crime Stoppers tip line at (405) 235-7300.
