An Oklahoma native is leaning on family and faith after losing his home, workplace, and community in the devastating Pacific Palisades fire.
Ross Chitwood, originally from Sulphur, Oklahoma, moved to California in 2013 with his husband, Zach. Over the years, he built a life in Pacific Palisades, serving as Director of Worship at Community Church United Methodist. That life was upended last week when the wildfire tore through the area, destroying his home and the church.
"It was the most beautiful, quaint, idyllic place," said Ross’s brother Bryce Chitwood, reflecting on visits to the area. "It's just absolutely gutting to think about all of it being gone."
The Chitwoods are no strangers to devastation. Nearly nine months ago, the family’s business in Sulphur was destroyed by an April 27 tornado. Bryce said those experiences have given their family the strength to endure challenges like this one.
"It has been a very difficult season for our family," Bryce said. "But we know we have our faith and our friends and family to rally around us."
Ross remains optimistic about rebuilding his life and community in Pacific Palisades.
"This is the closest community I've ever been a part of, and that's how I know it's going to come back together," Ross said. "And we know what that's like in Oklahoma."
The Chitwoods have set up a GoFundMe to help Ross and Zach with needs following the fire, it can be found HERE.
