Oklahoma City’s historic Gold Dome is one step closer to a $10 million renovation that could transform the 1958 landmark into a concert venue.
The Oklahoma City Council is set to meet this week to schedule a final hearing and vote on the project for Jan. 28. If approved, the plan would combine $3 million in tax increment financing (TIF) with $7 million in private investment to revitalize the iconic structure.
The Gold Dome, originally built as a Citizens State Bank, has been a focus of preservationists for years, as it faced the threat of demolition after losing all its tenants in the late 1990s. The city, the Alliance for Economic Development, and private developers have worked together to support the proposed renovation.
Joanna McSpadden, Oklahoma City’s economic development program manager, highlighted the significance of the project. "We drew the Gold Dome in as one of the first properties to focus on. It sits right along that corridor, and the hope is that we can drive some investment and new development to the area."
The planned renovations would focus primarily on the interior, reimagining the space as a concert venue while preserving the building’s historical significance.
A final decision on the project’s future is expected during the Jan. 28 council meeting.
