A man was struck and killed by a vehicle on the westbound lanes of the Broken Arrow Expressway between Sheridan and Yale Avenue Thursday morning, police said.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene and officers said he may have been hit by more than one vehicle while he was trying to cross the highway. The Tulsa Police Department is investigating the collision which is causing a significant backup of traffic.

Police are urging drivers to avoid the area if possible. The backup appears to extend east past South Memorial Drive and the westbound off-ramp from I-44 onto the BA is also backed up. Drivers are being asked to exit at the Sheridan exit.

Officer Danny Bean said that first responders will be spread throughout the area and that it will take some before the highway re-opens.
