The Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association suspended the Edmond North High School Girls Wrestling Program, citing two egregious acts of unsportsmanlike conduct, which Edmond Public Schools confirmed resulted from the actions of a parent.

News 9 spoke with a parent who claimed responsibility for one of the incidents in question. Ronnie Hishaw shared that he was ejected from his daughter’s wrestling match after using profanity toward a referee.

Hishaw said he deserved the ejection but wouldn’t call the incident “egregious.” He added that the team shouldn’t be punished for his actions.

"I'm a very outspoken parent. I speak very highly of our team. I'm a very passionate person,” explained Hishaw. “I don't disrespect anybody. I never called anybody out their name. I get death threats."

Hishaw said he was just advocating for his daughter after a referee failed to make a call during one of the matches.

“Parents use these adjectives to express frustration because the children aren’t being adequately protected,” he expressed. “I said ‘She's bending her ******* fingers’ and got thrown out of a match. That’s what’s egregious.”

Hishaw said he believes the incident may have contributed to the suspension.

OSSAA said the Edmond North team must sit out for the rest of the season.

In a statement, the district said:

“I can confirm the team has been suspended. Our notification from OSSAA said it was because of the actions of a parent, not a wrestler. EPS has appealed the suspension. We do not believe the team should be suspended over the actions of a parent.”

In the decision, the OSSAA cited Board Policy V, stating:

"Anytime an egregious act of unsportsmanlike conduct occurs two or more times during the same season, at the same school, in the same activity, the team and or individual will be suspended from participation in that activity for the remainder of the season.”

Unsportsmanlike acts under the policy included “acts by coaches, players, or spectators.”

The OSSAA Board said it will hear Edmond North’s appeal on Feb. 12.
