An apartment fire in Northwest Oklahoma City on Saturday was caused by an oven mitt left on the stove too long, according to firefighters.

The fire broke out around 4:30 p.m. near Northwest 10th and MacArthur. Firefighters said the oven mitt sparked a fire that quickly spread, sending heavy black smoke pouring from the building’s stairwell.

One resident was trapped inside their apartment due to the smoke.

Major Dane Yaw of the Oklahoma City Fire Department described the situation, saying, "Even though he was not affected by the apartment when he heard the smoke alarm, he opened his door and the fire blew in on him."

The resident was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

One family has been relocated to another apartment due to the fire’s damage.
