Oklahoma is preparing for another round of winter weather this week, with bitter cold, subzero wind chills, and hazardous roads due to sleet and ice.

“If it looks wet, I would assume that it’s ice,” said Chris Daniels, streets superintendent for Oklahoma City Public Works.

City road crews were busy responding to the last winter storm less than a week ago and are preparing for another round. Daniels urged drivers to allow extra time for travel and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.

“Just allow yourself plenty of time and lots of distance between you and the vehicle in front of you,” Daniels said.

He also emphasized giving city trucks plenty of space to operate as crews work to treat roads and plow snow.

“If you see our trucks out there on the road, please allow the space to operate and get the salt down,” he said.

Oklahoma Gas & Electric recommends staying home if possible and dressing in warm layers when venturing out. Experts also advise keeping an emergency kit in your car for those who must travel.

For those experiencing homelessness, local organizations are offering relief from the cold. Meghan Mueller, executive director of the Oklahoma City Homeless Alliance, said their day and night shelter is open 24/7.

“We want to make sure that we have a safe space for people to be warm indoors at all hours, day and night, when it’s this cold outside,” Mueller said.

The storm is expected to arrive late Monday night into Tuesday morning.
