Advocates for Oklahoma’s aging population are encouraging seniors to make their voices heard at the annual Senior Day at the Capitol on Monday. The event, which has been held for nearly 40 years, aims to connect seniors with resources and lawmakers to discuss key issues affecting aging in the state.

"We ask for seniors from all around the state of Oklahoma to come, and we want to hear your voice," said Rebecca, a representative from the Oklahoma Alliance on Aging. "We want to know what you are growing strong as a senior in Oklahoma and things that can change."

Organized by Oklahoma Human Services and the Oklahoma Alliance on Aging, the event will feature live discussions on aging services, resources for aging in place, and ongoing legislative efforts. Jeremy, a representative from Oklahoma Human Services, emphasized the importance of community involvement, noting that the state's aging population is rapidly growing.

"We know that in the next 10 years, people who are over 65 are going to outnumber children for the first time ever," Jeremy said. "One of the things that we're doing is highlighting our Aging Our Way plan, which engages thousands of Oklahomans to tackle the biggest challenges in aging."

One of the primary concerns is the growing waitlist for senior nutrition programs, including meal deliveries and congregate dining services. Advocates urge residents to contact their legislators to push for increased funding.

The event begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Oklahoma State Capitol, with speakers including Lt. Gov. Matt Pinnell and House Speaker Charles McCall. More than 300 participants have already registered, and organizers hope to see even more attendees.
