Sepsis is a condition that many have heard of but rarely understand. Dr. Lacy Anderson joined News 9 on the Daily Dose to help viewers understand the grave dangers of this condition.
Sepsis occurs when bacteria enter the bloodstream, often from another infection, and can be life-threatening. Heart valve and organ damage are possible and may lead to septic shock. Septic shock is deadly, causing a sharp drop in blood pressure and kidney damage.
Sepsis is diagnosed through blood culture tests that detect bacteria in the bloodstream.
Treatment for sepsis involves the use of IV antibiotics and hospital monitoring until blood cultures are negative, white blood cell levels normalize, and symptoms resolve.
After treatment for sepsis, patients should monitor for fever and call their doctor immediately if symptoms return.
