UPDATED STORY: Guthrie officer-involved shooting leaves witnesses stunned
Authorities have identified the man who died in an officer-involved shooting in the parking lot of the Billy Sims BBQ restaurant in Guthrie on Friday.
According to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, David Allen Dunford was shot by a police officer who was responding to a welfare check.
The scene was near Division Street and Industrial Road.
According to police, officers made contact with Dunford; after making contact, an officer shot the man.
OSBI says life-saving measures were performed, but he died on the scene.
Authorities say no others were hurt in the shooting.
OSBI said two guns were recovered from Dunford's vehicle but they are still working with Guthrie police to determine what led up to the shooting.
"The suspect was hit, lifesaving measures were performed for him here at the scene, unfortunately he was pronounced dead at the scene," Public Information Manager for OSBI, Hunter McKee, said.
Guthrie City Councilman and Mayor Elect, Adam Ropp released a statement that says:
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of David Dunford and extend my condolences to his loved ones. Reports suggest he may have been experiencing a mental health crisis, making this tragedy even more heartbreaking.
We urge the community to allow the state’s investigation to proceed, including a full review of the police chest cam footage. It’s important to let the facts come to light before drawing conclusions. We hope for transparency, accountability, and justice for all involved.”
