Department of Education executive order: what is and isn't affected

The executive order by President Trump seeks to dismantle Dept. of Education. Here's a look at which programs will and will not be affected due to the executive order.

Thursday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order calling to dismantle the Department of Education. While eliminating the department would require an act of Congress, the executive order could have impacts on some of the department's key functions such as loans, and distributing aid for low-income students and students with disabilities.

What is removed from the Department of Education's scope under the new executive order?


  1. Student loans 
  2. School nutrition 
  3. Special needs programs  


Which agencies will handle those programs? 


The U.S. Small Business Administration will handle the country's $1.6 trillion student loan portfolio. Though the Trump administration has made staff cuts, Education Secretary Linda McMahon said the federal programs will be maintained.


Health and Human Services Department will handle school nutrition and special needs programs.

 

What is still under the Department of Education's responsibilities? 


Title I funding for low-income schools, Pell grants, and money for children with disabilities will still be managed by the U.S. federal government for now.
