Classes for Geary High School are canceled for Monday, following a fire in the school's gym late Saturday night.
Firefighters from multiple departments, including Geary, Weatherford, Hydro, Greenfield, and Calumet, have been battling the flames for hours to contain the blaze. The fire, which broke out sometime after 10 p.m., has caused severe structural damage, including a complete roof collapse.
Blaine County Emergency Management officials confirmed Sunday morning that while the flames have been largely contained, the fire remains active. Officials say the blaze reached the edge of a nearby classroom, raising additional concerns about structural integrity and safety.
The City of Geary is also asking residents to conserve water after the fire heavily taxed their water system.
On Facebook, the city posted a statement saying:
"We would like to ask everyone to do their best to conserve water usage today in town so our water service system can recover from the high usage due to the large structure fire at the Old Geary Gym that occurred last night. Our reverse osmosis system and water service was heavily taxed but the large amount of water that was pumped by the fire engines that were on scene in order to battle this fire. Thank you for your cooperation. We appreciate you."
