The Oklahoma State Capitol will begin seeing a new type of landscaper begin work this week.

In February, the Oklahoma Office of Management and Enterprise Services purchased automated mowers, which are similar to robotic vacuum cleaners used in homes, to mow the grounds of the Capitol.

The mowers' "first day on the job" was Monday.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  1. The State of Oklahoma's Division of Government Efficiency purchased 7 automated mowers for $24,000.
  2. OMES said the automated mowers will maintain 1 acre around the state Capitol grounds.
  3. The agency said the mowers will save the state as much as $200,000 annually.

The automated mowers eliminate the need for contracted employees, according to OMES. They will naturally manage weeds without pesticides.

To ease any concerns about theft or safety, OMES shared each mower is equipped with GPS tracking and built-in alarms. The blades automatically shut off if someone picks up the mower.

As for what's next, OMES is looking at other properties where similar technology could be used in the future.
