New social studies standards recommended by the State Department of Education, which include numerous biblical references and critical thinking around the 2020 presidential election, are now waiting for approval from state lawmakers.
Lawmakers have until the end of the month to take action. If no decision is made, it is unclear what will happen next. The governor holds the authority to sign the document and send it back to the Department of Education, but could also reject the standards entirely.
As the deadline approaches, Democrats in both chambers have filed resolutions to unanimously deny the standards, adding further uncertainty to the process.
The state’s education community and lawmakers are closely monitoring the situation as they await the legislature’s decision on these controversial revisions.
