Stillwater announces Red Dirt Music week

The Mayor of Stillwater will delivered a proclamation Monday announcing Red Dirt Music week, April 7-13, in honor of the beloved genre and its many Oklahoman contributors.

This statement comes on the heels of The Boys from Oklahoma's sold-out shows starting April 10 at the Boone Pickens Stadium.

In Monday's city council meeting, Stillwater Mayor Will Joyce said, "We are proclaiming Red Dirt Music Week in the city of Stillwater this week. I don't know if you guys have heard [...] but we are having some concerts, a little bit of a reunion this week."

Within the proclamation, city officials say Red Dirt reflects the spirit and authenticity of the people, celebrating storytelling, deep-rooted traditions, and a deep sense of home, all of which have made it a cornerstone of American music.

The Oklahoma Red Dirt band Cross Canadian Ragweed, along with 3 others, were recently invited to be inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame for their contributions to music and culture in the state.

John Cooper from the Red Dirt Rangers band spoke at the meeting as well, saying, "This is the music that started here in Stillwater. A lot of people put it together, I couldn't be prouder of how far it's come. We started in a little place [...] called 'The Farm' with no aspirations other than creating good music for us and our friends to enjoy and have a good time. Stillwater was a much different place back then." Cooper also expressed his gratitude for how far the genre has spread across the world.

Cody Canada, the lead guitarist and vocalist for the Oklahoma-based band Cross Canadian Ragweed, also spoke a few words at Monday's meeting, praising the city and the band's love for its home state.

"We love this city. I always say that if it weren't for this city I wouldn't have anything. I wouldn't have my band or my family or any of my friends," Canada said. "I would also like my record expunged, please," Canada joked after receiving his hall of fame plaque.

Physical copies of the proclamation were later hand-delivered by Mayor Will Joyce to members of the Oklahoma-based band Cross Canadian Ragweed.

The week-long celebration is meant to honor the perseverance, creativity and dedication of the Red Dirt community, which as the declaration states, has music that resonates across generations and will continue to inspire future artists and music lovers for years to come.
