LitterBlitz turns trash pickup into a community gathering

Keeping our city clean isn’t just a job, but a shared responsibility. LitterBlitz is a citywide cleanup initiative that invites neighbors, civic clubs, coworkers, and friends to roll up their sleeves and make a visible difference in their communities.

With flexible scheduling, free cleanup kits, and support identifying locations, LitterBlitz makes it easy for anyone to get involved.

To learn more about how this effort is connecting people to both place and purpose, News 9 spoke with Lauren Nixon from OKC Beautiful, one of the organizers behind the program. In our Q&A below, she shares why LitterBlitz matters, what makes it work, and how you can join the movement.

Q: What is LitterBlitz doing for Earth Month?

A: "Today we're going to be picking up some trash in Memorial Park as a part of our LitterBlitz program, which is a community-wide effort to keep our parks and public places clean in Oklahoma City."

Q: Why is LitterBlitz so important?

A: "Litter cleanups are a really important thing. It's a really easy way for community members to get involved in some civic engagement, as well as benefiting our environment and our city's aesthetics, keeping everything beautiful."

Q: What has been the reaction to LitterBlitz?

A: "We have groups who rave about how they had such a great time and got to know each other a lot better, especially on a beautiful day like this. Litter cleanups are usually really fun and also you get to see firsthand the impact of litter and what it does to a public space."

Q: What are the places where you see the most litter?

A: "I would say along fence lines, especially in a windy season like we're having right now, fences tend to collect a lot of litter as well as if we're looking at rivers or streams, we get a lot of litter in the shorelines of those."

Q: How do we get involved with LitterBlitz?

A: "It is super easy to get involved in our LitterBlitz program. You can go to our website and you can register for LitterBlitz through that. You can also reach out to me directly at lauren@okcbeautiful.com."

Q: Who can come out?

A: "It doesn't have to be one person. You can have a whole group come out. We have individuals come out or groups from two to 100 who will do a LitterBlitz."
