A judge on Thursday ruled in favor of State Superintendent Ryan Walters in a defamation lawsuit filed by former teacher Summer Boismier, saying there was not enough evidence to prove defamation.
Boismier sued Walters in 2023, claiming he made false and misleading statements about her after her teaching license was revoked. In 2022, Boismier shared a QR code with students that linked to the Books Unbanned page of the Brooklyn Public Library in August of that year. Those books are banned under Oklahoma state guidelines.
Meanwhile, the Oklahoma Ethics Commission said Thursday it is negotiating a possible settlement with Walters in a separate case. The Commission is investigating whether Walters violated campaign finance laws during the 2022 election cycle.
Last month, the Commission voted to pursue legal action against Walters but noted that a settlement could still resolve the matter without going to court.
It is not uncommon for individuals under investigation to reach a settlement to avoid going to court, the Commission said. However, if an agreement is not reached, the case could proceed to court.
